History

Founded in 1870 by a group from the eastern United States who wanted to establish a colony dedicated to education and culture, the city is named after the nearby Santa Ana River, and is the birthplace of California's citrus industry.. Built on what, originally, had been a Spanish ranch. The first golf and polo courses in Southern California were built in Riverside. There they were planted in 1871 the first orange trees for which the city is famous. It is the sixty-first largest city in the United States, the twelfth in California, the first in the Inland Empire region and the fourth in the interior of California, it has the fourteenth largest metropolitan area in the nation, and is also part of the second combined area largest statistic in the country. The population exceeds 320,000 residents. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Real estate prices in Riverside are significantly lower than those in the adjoining counties.
