It is situated at an elevation of 4,068 feet and has a population of approximately 500 people. The town was established in 1883 when gold was discovered nearby and the area quickly became a mining boomtown.

The name “Absarokee” comes from the Crow Indian word for “children of the large-beaked bird”, referring to their tribal totem. The town was originally known as “Crow Agency” until it was officially incorporated in 1913 under its current name.
