Climate and Weather of Kalahari, Angola

The climate of Kalahari

According to shoppingpicks, the Kalahari is a semi-desert in the southern part of Africa, covering much of Botswana and Namibia. Foothills of the Kalahari extend into Angola, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Although the Kalahari looks a lot like a desert, it is not. The average precipitation figures are generally too high to speak of a desert. Due to these higher precipitation figures, the Kalahari landscape is much more diverse than that of a desert. Large steppes and savannas can be found in the Kalahari. The big difference between these two landscapes is that there are no trees or other high vegetation on a steppe, but mainly grasses. On a savanna you will also encounter smaller trees and acacias. The Kalahari is home to hundreds of different species of wildlife and some of Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuaries. The best known are probably the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park in South Africa.

Bushmen

In the Botswana and Namibian parts of the Kalahari live the San (formerly known as the Bushmen), an African people who have lived in this inhospitable area for centuries. They live in small communities in the Kalahari and lead a nomadic life. What is special is that they live on the moisture they find in the roots of plants that grow here.

The climate of the Kalahari

The Kalahari has a steppe climate, a climate that forms a transitional climate between the desert climate and the temperate maritime climate. Because it is a real transitional climate, there are major climatic differences within the Kalahari. For example, the average temperatures in some places during the year are closer together and the winter period is a lot milder. The average precipitation figures for the Kalahari differ greatly per area, which means that the character of the area can differ greatly per part. In places where annual precipitation is low, the Kalahari resembles a desert rather than a steppe. The places where the precipitation figures are a bit higher are the places where you have the greatest chance of encountering wild animals. These are drawn to the drinking places that are formed by the precipitation.

If you are going to visit the Kalahari, it is wise to take several precautions. For example, it is important to protect yourself from the bright sun: wear a hat, long pants and covering clothing. In addition, it is wise to bring some warmer clothes, because it can cool down considerably in the early morning and a little later in the evening.
