The S-line is only the “small” series of the Californian manufacturer Magico, but also it has already all the official trappings of large models: the bocksteife, low vibration aluminum case and this incredibly fine sound.
More radical, a generational can hardly fail: the Magico V3 – according to Alon Wolf of head of Magico the predecessor of the new S5 – was an elegant appearance: a three-way box with harmonious proportions, two small woofers, a living-room-friendly wood cabinet from multi-layered Birch and high acceptance by the female gender.
Of them, the new S5 is probably miles away. The much larger construction is processed and painted stainle also (in red, for example, she looks adorable), comes along but very much wuchtiger. The bulbous body is completely made up of often honeycomb aluminum and therefore almost 90 kilograms.
Aluminum or wood?
I personally like also the wooden models of Magico lot; the M5 is still the best box I’ve heard ever for a long time. But Alon Wolf has a unique attitude: “The wooden case of the V – series and M series were o.k.”, says the election Californians. “But they can be never so good as our aluminium.” The measurements confirm his thesis that housing alone constitutes a vital step forward.
The high-tech Assembly
He continues seamlessly in the treble range , to build a special version of the superior Beryllium dome settled Wolf from scan speak. He borrowed the big Q-line just the midrange : a heavy-duty 6-incher with NanoTech membranes – this substance from the other people build helicopter rotors.
But especially in the bass range Alon Wolf has proclaimed the end of modesty: had to come from the V3 with two dainty 7 inch, the S5 with Two 10-inch draws after deep bass. That’s nearly a doubling of the membrane surface – what is reflected also in the parameters. The S5 brings it – even though it represents a closed construction as with almost all other Magico – on a lower limiting frequency of 26 Hertz. This is handsome.
But above all – and this is modest progress to determine – was the best efficiency of all previously tested Mágicos. The measurement lab detected over 82 decibels. That is globally average, but loose three decibels more than the Q3 or the V3 have just once. Or converted into Watts: the S5 takes only half of the power and also comes very much higher maximum levelon one as we were used so far by transducers of this brand. With over 112 decibels can render also rock concerts or great Orchestra in approximate original volume.
This is new to Mágico. Through higher efficiency and the stately maximum level Wolf keeps pleasing the distortions. The measurement diagram has the S5 in the relevant listening area as largely free of distortion from. This is top notch.
Top notch also are extremely linear frequency response and the extremely good – means: fast falling – water measuring (not in the table to see). It stresses that Wolf and his people in the construction of the housing as well as in the selection of the driver were very carefully: above 500 Hertz are more to see almost no resonance here. It is rare for speakers.
This absence of resonance and distortion is actually audible. Already playing a – da the Mágico because of transportation was still quite cold – she seemed somehow smoother and nicer to celebrate as the connected also references the voice of Sara k. (of our title-CD). But slowly, I thought: once overnight to the reference Monos Ayre MR-X to run.
And of course, it was even better. The next morning one played well-tempered S5 now the music very soft-spoken. The V3 also was yes a paragon of naturalness – after all, it was the stereoplay reference for months. But the S5 is just better. Not only because it reaches a full octave deeper in the low-frequency and thus records the music very much an integrated, but also because it brings more structure and order in the middle and in the high-frequency sets a still greater ease on the day.
It’s about on the wonderful “Hallelujah”-listen to cover version by Paul O’Brien. This wonderfully full sound of the guitar body, fine swinging overtones of the strings, and then this sonorous voice: Then melted the colleagues from other departments invited me to the hearing test . They had something like that to date not one. The whole recording, liebevollst cod – engineer Hans-Jürgen Mauksch captured and trimmed for maximum transparency, seemed literally to live unrestrained – so many details came to light, so impressively present and vividly to imagine the S5 modeled the Canadian Bard in the listening room.
Even more impressive, because the recording is significantly more complex, the Magico diversified the ‘hunting song’ of the Saxon vocal ensemble. How exactly she worked out the individual voices, but also the fine intermediate sounds from the recording, was stunning. Because the Magico mastered this art, without – as the most other sound transducer with such resolution – ostensibly to sound. On the contrary: it came loose, very fine and transparent over everything and worked harmoniously but immensely and earthy.
Beauty and celebration beast
“And can be loud?”, Mr Ergen asked from the post office, after we had heard through the whole track CD with moderate level now. HM, what have we here at meaningful CDs? We should get this question with “beaucoup fish” by underworld . After the short period of murmur at the beginning, in the believe the piece do want it was harmless, use bold electric bass blows: deep, bleak, woofer hazardous. And at once the S5 showed a different face: one that you already rather would have dared to you of the proportions as the so graceful and beautiful organic impression she made so far. Let it rip correctly.
The basses not least came over deep, tired and very clean – an advantage of extremely low-vibration and closed housing. The bass beats that put the underworld duo Karl Hyde and Rick Smith on this point, found their way directly into the pit of your stomach, because unwisely, someone had put pass XP 30 at 14: 00 the level control of reference preamplifier, and the bass broke in with elemental force – but always beautiful clean – about us. That conjured up a pleasant grin on the faces of those present.
68 points at the end of the listening tests were on the assessment notes of the tester. Thus, the S5 in a League with speakers such as the Wilson Sophia, the vivid audio Giya or the T + A CWT plays 2000. The latter is a figure wonder due to their radiation behavior in large rooms in the advantage, that Wilson is hard to beat in terms of vitality, and the Giya. But as nice as this S5 no other sounds.
The advantages of the aluminium housing
‘S Alon Wolf of head of Magico has for years consistently Extremely rigid aluminium. The measurements taken with vibration transducers, underline his thesis of the advantage of properly damped aluminium housing: classic MDF Cabinet especially between 500 and 2000 Hertz to absorb more energy and play off – that’s the crux of the matter – only with long time delay. This time delay, recognizable on the long slopes of the energy curve in the range of 5000 Hertz, distort the signal. But with a simple Aluminum case is such a vibration freedom hard to reach; It must walls and the reinforcements in addition attenuating. Wolf has clever simulation programs, which perfectly calm the housing of his new Q and S-lines – as shown in the measurement. Only largely vibration-free housing make a best possible precision. This is difficult with MDF.
