The city of Montgomery was originally settled by John Cornish, a veteran of the War of 1812 who received land grants from Stephen F. Austin. The area was then incorporated as Montgomery County in 1837, with Montgomery becoming its county seat. The city has since grown rapidly but still retains much of its small-town charm.

Politically, Montgomery is part of Texas’ 8th congressional district and is represented by Republican Kevin Brady. The city also has a mayor-council form of government, with Mayor Sara Echols currently serving as mayor.
