The Muslim clerics were vehemently against and in 1929 they forced the king to flee. After a chaotic period, the British installed General Nadir Khan as shah. He also chose a western course and also came into conflict with the Muslim clergy. Nadir Khan was assassinated in 1933. His son Mohammed Zahir remained king until 1973.
