Senegal, with the capital Dakar as the westernmost city in Africa, has a transitional climate. The area north of Dakar is under the influence of the Sahara and is very dry. The rainy season in this grassy steppe area runs from July to September and is just long enough to allow peanut cultivation. It is hot, almost 40°C in October and November and over 40°C in March to June. Towards the south and the coast, the climate becomes wetter and less hot. Rainforest occurs in the extreme southwest.
