Tajikistan has a pronounced continental climate. Hot and dry in summer, cold in winter. The highest temperatures are reached in the low parts (half of the country is covered by mountains higher than 3000 meters) in the middle of summer (July) on average at 48°C. In January the mercury drops well below zero. These are extreme temperature differences that are typical of a continental climate.
