The name of the state of Tennessee comes from an Indian settlement on the Little Tennessee River, which is called “Tanasi” in the native language. The state extends over an area of almost 110,000 square kilometers and has approximately 6.4 million inhabitants. The largest cities are Memphis and Nashville, each with more than one million residents. Nashville is also the state capital and the seat of Davidson County.

Tennessee was first explored by Europeans almost 500 years ago during the expedition of Spaniard Hernando de Soto, with indigenous peoples being severely decimated by epidemics and violence.

From 1790, the founding of the state was organized by Congress, and in 1796 Tennessee finally joined the Union.
Tennessee has a lot to see, especially related to the history of music in Memphis and Nashville and the famous Tennessee whiskey.
First of all there is Memphis, the capital of rock ‘n’ roll and home of the blues. Walk around Beale Street, where you can hear the blues in many bars. Memphis is best known for Elvis Presley, who started his musical career here. His Graceland estate, which is located a few kilometers outside the city, is still a hugely popular attraction for fans, as is the Sun Studio, where the first recordings were made. At the Stax Museum of American Soul Music you can learn everything about Memphis soul.
There is also a world-class historic site in the city: the Lorraine Motel. Civil rights activist Martin Luther King was murdered here in 1968. The motel was converted into the National Civil Rights Museum by the American civil rights movement.

The east of the state is shaped by the most visited national park in the USA: Great Smoky Mountains. The resorts of Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Townsend and Pigeon Forge are located on its edge, where you can also find Dolly Parton’s theme park Dollywood.
Chattanooga and Knoxville are well-kept and culturally attractive cities in the east of the state. In Chattanooga, a trip to the local mountain Lookout Mountain and a visit to the Tennessee Aquarium, the world’s largest freshwater aquarium, are definitely worthwhile.
Knoxville is famous for the major sporting events at the University of Tennessee and nightlife in Market Square. In Brownsville near Jackson, on the route between Nashville and Memphis, you will find the new museum for Tina Turner at Exit 56 on Interstate 40, which grew up in the area. In Bristol, a small town in the extreme northeast of the state on the border with Virgina, the birthplace of country music museum, which is also new, opens up the origins of country music.

Arrival and best travel time
The climate in Tennessee is subtropical with pleasant temperatures all year round. However, it can get very hot in the summer months and very cold in the mountains in winter. The best time to travel is therefore spring.
The easiest way to get to Volunteer State is via the two international airports of Memphis and Nashville, although there are unfortunately no direct connections from Germany.
