Bronx
Bronx (Highlight New York City). It is a county of the state of New York, and one of the five metropolitan districts (borough) of the city. County and district have the same geographic boundaries. It is the northernmost district and is the only one of the five that is not an island (or part of one, in the case of Queens and Brooklyn) and is located on the mainland.
It was named after Jonas Bronck, a Swedish immigrant who was the first to settle in the area. In 2002, the population was 1,354,068 residents.
History
The territory that currently forms the county of the Bronx belonged to Westchester County.
In 1874, the western part of what is now the county of the Bronx was transferred to the county of New York and in 1895 the eastern remainder was transferred. In 1914, those transferred parts separated from New York County and formed present-day Bronx County.
Attractions
Bronx attractions include Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden. It also includes two of the largest parks in New York, Pelham Bay and Van Cortlandt.
The Bronx has the distinction of being the birthplace of Hip Hop.
In its cemetery are the graves of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Herman Melvilla, among other historical figures. At the entrance, you can request a map with these marked graves.
Government
Like the other counties in New York City, there is no county government in the Bronx, but county courts and other authorities such as the prosecutor do. Each metropolitan district in New York elects a President but this office does not have much power, de facto. The office of the District President (Borough President) was created with the consolidation of the five counties, to balance the balance of these, with respect to the central municipal government.
Each district president had a powerful role, stemming from having a vote on the New York City Board of Estimate, the body responsible for creating and approving city budgets and making spatial planning proposals. In 1989, the United States Supreme Court declared this Board unconstitutional, due to the fact that Brooklyn, the most populous county in the municipality, had no more vote on the ground than Staten Island, the least populated county in the city.
This constitutes a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, issued in 1964, under the premise of one man, one vote.
The powers of the Board of Estimate were transferred to the City Council (City Council, with 51 members, in charge of the legislative power in the city), thus increasing the centralized power in the New York municipality.
Since 1990, the District President has served as an advocate for the county’s interests with the mayoral agencies, city councils, New York state government, and corporations. The president of the District of the Bronx is Adolfo Carrión, Jr., the twelfth of them, since The Bronx belongs to the city of New York.
The District Attorney for the Bronx (known as District Attorney, in English) is Robert T. Johnson and has held the position since January 1, 1989, becoming the longest-serving district attorney in the history of the Bronx.
It also has 12 administrative districts, each served by a local Community Board. These Boards are the representative bodies that collect citizen complaints and serve as defenders of the residents of their area, before the City Council.
Anecdotally, the official name of the “borough” is The Bronx, while the county name is Bronx County (no article).
Geography
The Bronx has no other subdivisions, it is located at 40 ° 4215 “north latitude and 73 ° 555” west longitude.
The commune has an area of 148.7 km². 108.9 km ^ 2 formed by land and 39.9 km ^ 2 of water, which constitutes 26.82% of the total.
Many of the streets in the Bronx are numbered, but unlike the numbering in Brooklyn and Queens, the Bronx numbering system is a continuation of the Manhattan system, since it originally belonged to New York County. Because of this, the numbering begins at 132 East Street.
Demography
Its current population is 1,397,287 residents, of which:
- 0% are Latino or Hispanic
- 4% are of black ethnicity
- 1% are Caucasian (European or of European descent).
- 5% are of Asian origin
- The rest are made up of people of other ethnicities
The population of Latino / Hispanic origin is the fastest growing, due to the high fertility rate of Latina women residing in the United States, and also due to legal and illegal immigration from Latin America.
