Gary is the largest city in Lake County, in the state of Indiana (United States). The city is located to the southeast of the Chicago metropolitan area, a city from which it is about 40 km. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 102,746 residents, which places it as the third most populous city in the state, after Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. It is washed by Lake Michigan and is primarily known as the birthplace of Michael Jackson.
History
The city was founded in 1906 by U. S. Steel, an American steelmaking company, as the home for its new production facility. The name of the city was put in honor of the president of that company, Elbert H. Gary. Among American cities with more than 100,000 residents, Gary has the highest percentage of African-American residents (according to the 2000 census). It was one of the first cities in the country to have a black mayor, Richard G. Hatcher, and housed in 1972 the National Convention of Black Politicians. At the same time, Gary was abandoned by many wealthy and middle-class families, relocating to nearby cities. Gary is the city where pop superstar Michael Jackson was born.
Foundation
The city was created in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation, on the shores of Lake Michigan. Geography
