Glass Beach – California, USA
Glass Beach – California, USA
This place is amazing with its unusual beach. In the first half of the 20th century, on the territory where this beach is now located, there was a waste dump. In the 60s, the landfill was closed, and the garbage was left to itself. Mountains of broken glass, plastic and other things lay on the shore under the sun, washed by the sea.
As a result, by the 80s, they discovered that there was no trace of the landfill, and all the glass that was on the beach, under the influence of sea water, turned into multi-colored, translucent stones of amazing beauty. And since then tourists have been drawn to this beach, the place has become popular. There were even craftsmen who make all sorts of souvenirs from these smooth pieces of glass, which are well bought up by tourists who come to see the miracle of nature’s intervention in human affairs.
Self-propelled rocks of Racetrack Playa
Racetrack Playa Valley, California, USA
The mystery of the “self-propelled” stones of the Racetrack Playa Valley has long intrigued scientists: for no apparent reason, the stones set in motion, leaving a characteristic mark on the surface of the soil.
A dry lake, sometimes filled with water, is located in the northwestern part of the Death Valley National Park, California, USA. It is known for an interesting geological phenomenon – stones moving along the dried bottom.
The riddle was solved only in the 21st century. It turned out that the reason for this is the sharp changes in climate in the valley area. In summer the temperature reaches + 37 *C, in winter the valley is filled with a thin layer of water. The water freezes at night and melts during the day.
The alternation of freezing and thawing creates conditions that set the stones in motion. The wind sets the ice masses floating in the middle of the open water in motion, and these massifs carry the stones with them.
Different stones fall into the conditions under which they begin to move at different times and the ice moves in different directions, which explains the difference in the trajectories of the movement of stones.
